what are the origins of the name "country club" for a place where people play golf?

what I’m wondering is why do they use the word "country" in the name?

Well, there just usually isn’t enough room in the city for a golf course, so you have to go out to the country to build one. The original Country Club was one of the first golf courses in the US.

The name " country " came about when the only tracts of land available for course construction were in the areas outside the population centers. Thus the name country. In our area , two of the more renown venues were on the major transportation routes( electrified trolley lines ) prior to the influx of automobiles.

Don’t take this answer for more than what it’s worth! this is just my guess/interpretation. I have no real knowledge of this. lol

I would think "Country Club" is derived from a word such as ‘Countrymen.’ i.e. your comrades, friends, people who share your beliefs/customs. Since Country Clubs are private, it could be that the original country club was just for one economic class, race, group/organization, etc.
