To hit it on consistant basis will come later...too early to expect miracles from the get go...

Relaxed swing, try not to kill the ball...and most of all...have FUN!

Try not to lose the first rule of playing golf...enjoy the moment no matter what happens! you are living a dream that many can only dream of doing...word to the wise.

Good Grief........Now that youu have gotten the encyclopedia on Gracious knows what........Do this the right way first........go get a lesson or 2 and just practice......all the other tips may have some relevance.....but as a beginner....(Not to demean you) You need to stay with the very basics first and the only place to learn them correctly is from a teaching pro......I swear you'll be much happier and a lot less confused.
References :
You have a bunch of information to plow through from other answerers so when you have ingested all of that and become thoroughly confused go back to the basics. Develop a consistent swing plane. This involves taking your stance ,placing the ball in the same position for each club you choose. Making a back swing which follows a consistent pattern, repeating that pattern on the downswing and follow through and finishing with your belt buckle ( or belly button) facing the intended flight of your ball. Remember, swing through the ball, not at the ball.
References :
Just basic stuff applicable to every shot and consistently used for 74 years with a certain degree of success.

this might sound stupid, but it truly works. don't focus on the ball, focus on a spot about 6 inches behind the ball, I used to put a dime behind the ball to focus on it. to keep your swing correct take a towel and put it across your chest and tucked up under your armpits, it keeps your arms even with your shoulders for a nice straight swing, the towel should not drop out of your armpits at anytime. like I said it sounds stupid, but it really does work. was a trick I learned from my golf coach when I was in high school and it straightens out my swing even now when I start to get a off. hope it helps ya out.
References :
Whatever you do, DON'T focus on keeping your head down.

When you keep your head down, at the start of the swing you are likely to be looking straight at the golf ball.

The problem is, if you look straight at the ball when you setup to the ball, you won't be able to make a correct/full backswing. Your left shoulder (for right handed golfers) will hit your chin shortly after you've completed the first half of the backswing, making it difficult to coil or turn back correctly.

It can also cause you to raise your head up (or get taller) at impact, which causes you to top the ball. Not only that, it can cause you to hit behind the ball as well since you'll be forced to use your hands, wrists, & arms to complete your backswing instead of the big muscles of your upper body (the back of your shoulders), and when you get too handsy it's easy to hit behind the ball

Instead of keeping your head down, focus on your sternum, or a button on your golf shirt. If your sternum stays the same height, you won't top the ball and you won't hit any fatties either. This is also great when chipping or pitching from a tight lie.

The only other advice I can give you is to make sure that your hands (or the grip end of the club) get back to the ball (or the impact position) before the clubhead does. This will promote solid contact and will make it easier to swing thru the ball instead of at the ball.

If you swing thru the ball, you create the maximum amount of clubhead speed where you want it... when the club makes contact w/ the ball.

If you swing at the ball, you're opening up a big can of worms - scooping, topping, lack of consistency, lack of solid strike, lack of distance, fat shots, and the list goes on.

I hope this helps. If you have any other questions, please feel free to visit my website and click on Contact Us to ask anything golf related.

Please follow the the Simple Golf Swing System which you will:
1. hit the ball straighter and further than you ever hit before.
2. hit with greater distance and accuracy every time.
3. hit more greens and get the ball consistently close to the pin.
You'll wonder what ever happened to that awful slice you used to have.
You'll gain a new outlook on golf with greater confidence in your game. Because you're armed with a proven system that actually works!
I recommend you to refer to the link below so to master the Simple Golf Swing System that will assure you of happy golfing and good scores. http://tinyurl.com/6o7rrr

The slow back swing is a good tip, so is to keep your head down. However keeping the eye on the ball will cause a tendency to lift the head to follow the shot. I recommend looking at a spot on the ground directly behind the ball (the spot doesn't move like the ball does, so neither will your head). Also a good idea is to take a shorter back swing. A long back swing is hard to control, and you can get just as much distance out of a short one because it is hit more solidly. As far as the topping and hitting the ground before the ball, pay attention to your ball location in your stance, if it is too far forward you are more likely to top it because your swing is on the up slant. Try and hit 10-20 balls from the same spot, if out of that group the majority was topped, move the ball back in your stance, if you hit the ground, move it forward. Do this until your hitting mostly ball. Good luck.
References :
3.0 NCGA.USGA handicap
